FREDERICK, MD–(ENEWSPF)–May 18, 2012. While the leaders of the G8 met far from public view at nearby Camp David, members of the Occupy movement presented a vision for sustainable, democratic alternatives to globalized corporatism.
“From day one, the G8 has served the interests of the wealthiest individuals and financial institutions in a handful of nations, in conflict with everyone else,” said Kevin Zeese, one of the organizers of the Occupy G8 People’s Summit. “The global 99% — at home and abroad — finds itself on the losing side of this corrupt bargain. This insular nexus of power known as the G8 reflexively holds the rest of us at arms length.”
Speakers at today’s “Occupy G8 People’s Summit” advocated for policies such as a “Robin Hood Tax” on the purchase of stocks, bonds and derivatives to generate funding for urgent needs such as poverty and climate change. Several speakers advocated for debt relief for poor nations. Others highlighted the lack of popular awareness of the pending “Trans Pacific Partnership” free trade agreement.
“Governments around the world are being thrown out of office as people stand up against austerity,” said Margaret Flowers, MD, an organizer of the Occupy G8 People’s Summit. “The international Occupy movement stands with the people against the power of the looting class.”
The international Occupy movement has released a manifesto which calls for a democratized economy that works for people’s welfare, supports the environment, and respects the value of labor.

A “Counter-G8 Community Bloc Party” will be held from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM Saturday May 19 at Baker Park, located at W. 2nd St. and N. Bentz St. in Frederick, MD.
