Representative Schakowsky Statement on Sikh Temple Shootings

Washington, D.C.–(ENEWSPF)–August 6, 2012 – Today, Rep. Jan Schakowsky released the following statement after a mass shooting in Oak Creek, Wisconsin killed six people in a Sikh temple:

“I am deeply saddened by the tragic, senseless shooting at a Sikh temple in Oak Creek, Wisconsin. My district has a large, active and highly respected Sikh community. My heart goes out to the families and friends of the six people killed and others wounded in this horrific crime.

This crime is being investigated as an act of domestic terrorism. It is disturbing that since the attacks on September 11, 2001, the Sikh community has been targets of assault and bigotry. Americans need to stand shoulder to shoulder to pay tribute to American values of freedom, equality and tolerance. We must respect all cultures and faiths. Terrorism of any cultural or religious group in America is unacceptable.

In the wake of this tragedy, we should rekindle the spirit of American unity and come together to support the Sikh community.”
