Mitt Romney Doubles Down on His Support of Anti-Choice Candidates Who Want to Criminalize Abortion for Rape Survivors

Washington, D.C. –(ENEWSPF)–November 5, 2012. Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America, condemned presidential hopeful Gov. Mitt Romney for supporting yet another anti-choice Senate candidate, Rick Berg (R-ND).

In 2007, Berg voted with a minority of the North Dakota state house to ban abortion entirely, including in cases of rape and incest. The bill included criminal penalties—including prison—for both doctors and women.

“Mitt Romney is doubling down on an outrageous position: that rape survivors who need abortion care should be shamed, scorned – and even, apparently, thrown in jail,” Keenan said. “I am as appalled by Romney’s blatant lack of compassion for women as I am by the disgraceful company he keeps. Even many pro-life Americans would find that position indefensible. Romney’s support for Senate candidates Richard Mourdock and now Rick Berg tells us all we need to know about his anti-choice agenda. When people show you who they are, believe them. Women cannot trust Mitt Romney.”

Rick Berg is the most recent anti-choice candidate to receive a public endorsement from Mitt Romney. Recently, Richard Mourdock, Romney-endorsed U.S. Senate candidate from Indiana, declared that pregnancy resulting from rape is “something that God intended to happen.” This is an idea also embraced by Romney’s vice-presidential running mate, Paul Ryan, who called rape just another “method of conception.”
