SEIU: House Committee Ignores Senate Progress on Border Security

Committee on Homeland Security passes border security Band-Aid bill despite the public’s call for commonsense immigration reform

WASHINGTON, DC–(ENEWSPF)–May 16, 2013.  After the House Committee on Homeland Security held a markup and passed the Border Security Results Act of 2013, Eliseo Medina, the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Secretary-Treasurer, released the following statement:

“Communities from across the nation have been driving a very clear message to Congress: we want a commonsense immigration bill that will smartly and fairly carry out measures to secure the border and, more importantly, create a roadmap to citizenship. The Senate Judiciary Committee has this bill in its hands, and as they carefully debate it, they continue to strengthen the legislation with balanced and bipartisan amendments.

“On the other hand, some members of the House prefer a piecemeal approach in the midst of undeniable momentum for comprehensive legislation that includes the centerpiece of true immigration reform–a pathway to citizenship without burdensome barriers. Rather than ignore the progress made by the Senators on border security, the House should reexamine its steps going forward and work with the growing consensus of leaders, communities and industries who want to fix our broken immigration system once and for all with a solution that recognizes the millions of aspiring Americans who deserve an opportunity to earn citizenship.”
