Insurgents Again Kill and Wound Dozens of Afghan Civilians, May 18, 2013

KABUL, Afghanistan–(ENEWSPF)–May 18, 2013 – Friday evening, the insurgents exploded powerful bombs in a residential area in Kandahar City that killed or wounded dozens of Afghan civilians.  The attack came at about 7:40 p.m. and appears to have been conducted to cause maximum casualties.

“Once again the insurgents have chosen to conduct an attack that was designed to kill or maim the maximum number of people possible,” said Gen. Joseph F. Dunford, commander of the International Security Assistance Force. “To conduct this attack in a crowded area on the traditional day of peace and mercy speaks to the utter ruthlessness of the insurgents.”

To date in 2013, the insurgents’ IED campaign has claimed the lives of several hundred innocent Afghan civilians.  According to a report by the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan, in 2012 the insurgents were responsible for almost 85 percent of the civilian casualties.

“Our hearts go out to the victims of this attack. They remain in our thoughts as they try to rebuild their lives from this tragic experience,” Dunford said.
