Park Forest, IL-(ENEWSPF)- State contract workers install slats on the median at the railroad crossing on Western Avenue Wednesday. This work is being done in preparation for that crossing’s designation as a "Quiet Zone."

The designation means that trains approaching the crossing will not sound their horns unless there is a living entity on the tracks (human, animal, or human in a vehicle).

The village board and staff have been pursuing Quiet Zone status for the crossing for almost two years. The process involved multiple applications and resolutions passed.

The installation of the slats means the project is nearing completion. Residents and motorists can expect the crossing to go "quiet" possibly as soon as next month.

Possibly as soon as sometime during the first full week of October.

No kidding.
