Two Prairie State College Graduates Named to All-Illinois Academic Team


CHICAGO HEIGHTS—(ENEWSPF)—May 16, 2014. Two Prairie State College (PSC) May 2014 graduating students were named Phi Theta Kappa All-Illinois Academic Team members.

Community colleges in Illinois select two students yearly for the prestigious honor, in recognition of their outstanding academic performance and service to the college and community. Both Daniel R. Eichler and Amy L. Farley are graduating PSC with honors, and have been involved with the Nu Sigma Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa and the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) program at PSC, as well as other extracurricular activities on campus.

Eichler is a Peer-Led Team Learning Workshop leader in chemistry the STEM@PSC program. He also was named one of only 50 students in the United States to be named a Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team Gold Scholar in 2014. He was chosen from more than 1,700 applications. The Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team recognizes high achieving two-year college students who demonstrate academic excellence and intellectual rigor combined with leadership and service that extends their education beyond the classroom to benefit society.

At PSC, Eichler worked on a biochemistry research project to present at a STEM Skyway conference. Eichler received an associate degree in business from PSC in May 2013. He is graduating summa cum laude with an Associate in Science degree, and plans to continue his education studying chemistry at the University of Illinois – Chicago.

Amy L. Farley is a 2014 Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise Scholarship recipient. The Coca-Cola Leaders of Promise scholarship program provides new Phi Theta Kappa members with financial resources to help defray educational expenses while enrolled in a two-year college in order to develop leadership potential through participation in Phi Theta Kappa programs. She is former treasurer of the Nu Sigma Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa. Farley also worked as a Peer-Led Team Learning workshop leader for math in the STEM@PSC program during the spring 2013 semester. She also served as a volunteer tax preparer with the Center for Economic Progress for the 2012 tax season. She is graduating summa cum laude with an Associate in Arts degree, and plans to continue her education studying accounting at Governors State University.

Eichler and Farley will be recognized during the 55th Annual Commencement Ceremonies being held at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 17. More than 400 students will graduate from PSC with associate degrees and certificates, and approximately 300 graduates will participate in the ceremony.
