Congresswoman Duckworth: It’s Time for America to Lead on Leave

Washington, DC–(ENEWSPF)–February 5, 2016.  Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth (IL-08) issued the following statement on the 23rd anniversary of President Bill Clinton signing the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) into law.

“23 years ago today, President Clinton signed the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) to ensure Americans could take unpaid time off of work to care for themselves, their newborn children or other family members without fear of losing their jobs. The law provides important protections for middle-class working families, but there is more we can do. Even 23 years later, only 13 percent of Americans work for companies that offer paid family leave and we remain the world’s only developed nation that doesn’t ensure paid leave for new mothers. I’m pleased the Armed Forces recently took steps to improve parental benefits for many servicemembers and I am a proud cosponsor of the Federal Employee Paid Parental Leave Act and Family and Medical Insurance Leave Act. It’s time for America to lead on leave.”
