CHICAGO–(ENEWSPF)–February 8, 2016. At a time when studies suggest the gap between rich and poor is growing, Roosevelt University’s Gage Galley will present a provocative and artistically driven photo exhibit that examines wealth and privilege around the world today.
Opening for the first time in the United States on Thursday, Feb. 11, One Percent: Privilege in a Time of Global Inequality features images by some of the world’s best photographers who have captured affluence in many different settings and situations.
“Some of the images map out points in the world of affluence, such as education, leisure and healthcare. Other images are positioned outside the world of the 1%, looking back in,” said Myles Little, Time Magazine senior photo editor and curator of the exhibit that will run through May 28 at Roosevelt’s Gage Gallery, 18 S. Michigan Ave., Chicago.
Little will be on hand to discuss One Percent: Privilege in a Time of Global Inequality and lead a discussion on closing the world’s growing wealth gap during an opening night reception that begins at 5 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 11 at Gage.
Featuring the work of more than 30 photographers who are known internationally, the exhibit is based on the book, One Percent: Privilege in a Time of Global Inequality.
The show has been touring the world since September 2015 when it opened at the Pingyao International Photography Festival in Pingyao, China, making stops in Dubai, Germany, Nigeria, Guatemala, France and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
“It is estimated that the poorer half of the global population possesses less than 1% of global wealth, while the richest 10% of adults own 86% of all wealth…This exhibition vividly captures some of the symptoms of this worldwide disease and highlights the imperative to combat it,” Nobel Prize-winning economist and inequality expert Joseph Stiglitz has noted in an essay in the One Percent book that is being used in part to introduce the new Gage Gallery show.
