OAKLAND, CA –(ENEWSPF)–August 25, 2016. Today marks 100 years since the creation of the National Park Service. What started with one park, Yellowstone, has grown into a system of national parks and monuments that includes park areas in all 50 states, Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C. As part of the Centennial celebrations Sierra Club is leading nature outings and working across the country to connect communities with the great outdoors.
In observation of the occasion Sierra Club President Aaron Mair issued the following statement:
“The history of the Sierra Club and the National Park Service are intertwined. The Sierra Club played an integral role in the creation of parks like Grand Canyon, Mt. Rainier, Glacier, and even in the creation of the National Park Service itself.
“On the centennial, we applaud President Obama for expanding public lands to better reflect the full American story. As we look to the next 100 years, we’re eager to continue that progress to ensure people from all walks of life can see themselves on our public lands.
“Over the years national parks have served as road trip, field trip, picnic, and recreation destinations. They’ve provided opportunities for solitude and camaraderie, extreme adventures, and quiet learning. Whether it’s the majestic lands surrounding the Grand Canyon or a neighborhood green space, the wild is where you find it — and we want everyone to be able to experience it. We look forward with hope to the next century of conservation.”
