CHICAGO HEIGHTS–(ENEWSPF)–October 27, 2016. Prairie State College (PSC) honored Richard V. Green of Matteson with the 2016 Dr. James H. Griffith Community Service Award at PSC. The award was presented at a recent meeting of the PSC Board of Trustees.
The award is named after the former trustee, who served on the PSC Board of Trustees for 25 years. It is intended to recognize a person or group at PSC who has contributed in an extraordinary way to the community.
Green was honored for all the volunteer activities he participated in as a student at PSC.
Helen Manley, PSC’s coordinator of student life, who nominated Green for the award said, “[nominating Green] was a very easy decision for me because he has accomplished so much and has done so many things for others.”
“Something that is so refreshing about Richard is that he does so many things to help our students, the college with initiatives and the community, but he never wants the credit. He will always give the credit to others,” she said.
As a student, Green maintained two jobs, was a member of five student clubs and maintained a 4.0 GPA. Among his many volunteer activities, Green tutored fellow students, and assisted with the PSC Foundation’s Annual Special Event and the “Trash for Treasures” sustainability event on campus. He participated in Habitat for Humanity and helped feed veterans during the holidays. He also helped raise funds for the Ronald McDonald Charities, Toys for Tots and Give Hope Fight Poverty.
Green was recognized as Student Veteran of the Year, received the 2016 Excellence in Leadership Award, was a finalist for the Jack Kent Cooke Scholarship, received the One Million Degrees Scholarship and was named to the dean’s list and part-time honors list every semester.
“He has certainly earned the respect and admiration of the faculty, staff and his peers at PSC. I think what he likes best at the end of the day is the fact that he was able to help someone else so they can achieve their goals,” Manley said.
PSC President Dr. Terri L Winfree added, “Richard’s involvement exemplifies one of the hallmarks of Prairie State College – where the students are encouraged to be a part of the solution,” she said. “Service learning and volunteerism is something we strongly encourage at Prairie State College.”
