Welcome Nero! Welcome Caligula! Trump’s Latest Tweet Is His Worst

ENEWSPF – The American people — those in all the right places, not the majority — but the American people have elected a Nero, a Caligula. And he likes to Tweet. And his latest Tweet, as of this writing, is by far his worst.

One Donald J. Trump, the ostensible president-elect, will take the oath of office January 20, 2017.

Do oaths or promises, contracts or commitments, bind this man?

Take flag burning. Already protected by the United States Supreme Court as free speech. Donald wants to strip citizenship from anyone who burns an American flag.

Now, think about this.

Rapists, murderers, thieves, home-grown terrorists — no loss of citizenship from Emperor Trump. But, burn an American flag?

Well, that’s where the buck stops.

One would think the buck would have stopped for most Americans when the candidate Trump mocked a disabled reporter.

But, now, he can do so much more. So much worse.

Incredible that this man can even conceive of such punitive measures for something so relatively benign as burning a flag. At the same time, he makes no mentions of actual crimes, actions so horrific, they cause us all to take pause.

No. Welcome to the era of America’s Nero, a man, who, in his day built golden monuments to himself. Welcome to the era of America’s Caligula, a man who, in his day, had no concept of morality, no understanding of ethics, whose hedonism knew no bounds.

Welcome to the era of the Emperor Trump.

A friend on Facebook mused yesterday that the United States would have no more presidential elections. This was the last. Underneath the speculation is a concern I share: will this new emperor unleash the nuclear forces of this country? Will there be anyone to provide a check and balance if he feels personally threatened, and, instead of reaching for his Twitter account, he reaches for weapons far more sinister?

How long will he tolerate the protests in his own country once he has assumed the title of president?

How long will this emperor, nurtured by Vladimir Putin, keep his vicious temper in check when he has the authority to give orders to various National Guards?

This Advent season, for those of us who celebrate that season, I am reminded of William Butler Yeats, specifically, his offering created in 1920, The Second Coming.

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.
Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
Troubles my sight: somewhere in the sands of the desert
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Reel shadows of the indignant desert birds.
The darkness drops again; but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

What “rough beast” indeed?
