La Villita Se Defiende: Little Village Leaders and Institutions Get Organized in Response to Trump Administration

Little Village, Chicago –(ENEWSPF)–January 24, 2017) – After months of planning, local leaders and institutions gathered today to publicly launch “La Villita Se Defiende,” a multi-sector effort that is built on the community’s history of activism and collaboration. The event will take place on Tuesday, January 24 at 11 a.m. at the Little Village Arch on 26th and Albany in Chicago.
The election of Donald Trump as US president has potentially far reaching and damaging consequences for immigrant communities like Little Village, particularly in relation to deportations and detentions. This initiative is focused on mobilizing the entire community to ensure that all members are supported and respected.
The initiative rests on a comprehensive plan that includes strategies to:
  • Ensure that community members know their rights and are connected to key resources.
  • Promote a bold platform for policy and systems change.
  • Engage innovative tools for sharing information across and beyond the community.
  • Create structures that directly protect undocumented residents from deportation and detention.
Community members and representatives from all sectors, including local businesses, churches, schools, healthcare institutions, community-based organizations, academia, legal services agencies, and alderman’s offices are involved in the effort, and the support and momentum continues to grow.
Rosi Carrasco from Organized Communities Against Deportations (OCAD) captured the spirit of the initiative when she said, “OCAD has been working with families facing deportation for years and we know that the best defense for our community is to be organized. Today more than ever it is important to defend our rights and not allow ourselves to be divided. Our community and city should be safe places for our families.”

We will firmly uphold the idea that all people deserve human rights and respect. We will resist efforts to create divisions within the immigrant/migrant community, and will prepare our community to protect itself and resist the expansion of the methods and definitions used to criminalize immigrants/migrants and others.
