Nashville Mayor Karl Dean Announces Support of the Freedom to Marry

Joins Coalition of Mayors Across Country Who Support Marriage, Including Mayors From Every Southern State

New York –(ENEWSPF)–August 21, 2014.  Today Nashville Mayor Karl Dean became the first Tennessee mayor to join Mayors for the Freedom to Marry, a broad-based, nonpartisan coalition of nearly 500 mayors who are making the case for marriage for same-sex couples in their communities.

“Joining mayors across the country, Nashville’s mayor today is standing up for families in his community and speaking out in support of the freedom to marry,” said Evan Wolfson, president of Freedom to Marry. “Tennessee’s denial of the freedom to marry directly harms the state’s more than 10,000 same-sex couples and their loved ones, and by putting obstacles in the path of businesses and families, drags everyone down. We welcome Mayor Dean as another voice in favor of moving Tennessee, the South, and all of America to the right side of history.”

With today’s addition of Mayor Dean, Mayors for the Freedom to Marry now includes mayors representing every Southern state.

“I believe that all people should be treated fairly and equally and that their individual dignity should be respected,” said Nashville Mayor Karl Dean. “Embracing and celebrating our growing diversity makes our city stronger. Nashville needs to continue in that direction, and it’s my hope that joining this effort will help us do that.”

Mayors for the Freedom to Marry range from geographically diverse cities both large and small, in states with the freedom to marry and in states where marriage cases are pending in the courts. Marriage supporters can encourage their own mayors to join Mayors for the Freedom to Marry by sending and asking them to sign the official pledge.

Freedom to Marry is the campaign to win marriage nationwide. We are pursuing our Roadmap to Victory by working to win the freedom to marry in more states, grow the national majority for marriage, and end federal marriage discrimination. We partner with individuals and organizations across the country to end the exclusion of same-sex couples from marriage and the protections, responsibilities, and commitment that marriage brings.
