Health Care Reform

Statement by Representative Jan Schakowsky on the Opening of ‘Get Covered Illinois’ Marketplace

Washington, DC—(ENEWSPF)–October 1, 2013 – Rep. Jan Schakowsky released the following statement on the opening of the Get Covered Illinois Marketplace under Obamacare:

“Today is an historic day in this country. Despite a Republican-led government shutdown, Illinoisans are celebrating the opening of Get Covered Illinois, one of our nation’s new Health Insurance Marketplaces that will provide affordable health insurance options to millions of Americans across the country.

“After years of fighting to expand universal access to health insurance coverage, Congress passed, the President signed, and the Supreme Court upheld Obamacare as the law of the land. Starting today, Americans will be able to learn about the health plan choices and the financial assistance available to them. An army of in person assistors have been trained and stand ready to help Americans understand their options and enroll in the coverage that best meet their needs.”

“Far too long, too many Illinoisans have been locked out of affordable coverage, been forced to pay sky-high premiums, or been stuck with insurance policies that don’t cover their pre-existing conditions and the care they need.

“People like Gayle Weiss, who was denied insurance because she has rheumatoid arthritis. Gayle writes, ‘I’m am so excited that our President has taken steps to help all Americans with access to health care. Finally I won’t have to worry about losing everything I’ve worked so hard for if I suffered a catastrophic health issue. No one should have to risk their future for something they have no control over, like illness.’

“Or Eva Strobeck, who is living with schizophrenia and diabetes. Eva writes, ‘Obamacare makes it possible to get insurance at an affordable rate which I cannot do without. I cannot survive without Obamacare. It must be funded by Congress.’

“Or David Zoltan, 36 years old, who had to visit emergency rooms to get the insulin he needed for his diabetes until he was able to get coverage through Obamacare’s pre-existing condition plan. David writes, ‘Obamacare has done so much for me, and I’m proud today to see the beginning of the largest expansion of health care in my lifetime. There will be problems to fix, but we are America. We will fix these problems. We will give the precious necessity of health security to our citizens.’

“This transformative law will make a difference in the lives of Gayle, Eva and David and the 129 million Americans who can now rest assured that their preexisting conditions will not deny them access to affordable health insurance coverage.”
