SEIU Members Join in President Obama’s Renewed Push to Spread the Word on the Affordable Care Ac

SEIU Healthcare Workers from California, Connecticut and Maryland Join in White House Event and Pledge to Bring It Home

Washington, DC–(ENEWSPF)–December 3, 2013.  SEIU members stood with President Obama today and accepted his challenge to step up their own strong efforts to spread the word on low-cost insurance coverage available through the Affordable Care Act – and on the benefits of the new healthcare law available to all Americans.

Standing immediately behind the president at today’s White House event were three healthcare workers, all with personal stories of finding affordable care for themselves or their families.

•Norman Peloquin, a 50-year-old from Canterbury, Conn., is a homecare provider who was paying $598 a month for individual coverage and is now paying $343 a month for an even better plan available through his state marketplace, set up under the Affordable Care Act.

•Chantel Mendez of Bridgeport, Conn., a 28-year-old single mom who was able to get affordable coverage for herself and her 7-year-old daughter, who has asthma and had tonsillitis and faced several costly hospitalizations.

•Debra Jeje of Suitland, Md., a hospital staff person whose 22-year-old son had aged out of her health insurance plan, but was able to stay on it thanks to the Affordable Care Act.

In addition, two member vice presidents of the SEIU United Long-Term Care Workers West from California jumped to their feet to join in a standing ovation when President Obama pledged that the new healthcare law would be safe and sound as long as he was president.

•Brenda Jackson, a homecare worker from Oakland, Calif., made a presentation to 27 family members and friends on Thanksgiving Day during half-time of a football game and signed 13 of them up for coverage.

•Hripsme Tamzyan, a homecare worker from the Los Angeles area, said she and other L.A. area certified outreach workers have been talking with 160 people a day about getting signed up for health coverage at big events all over the city; she pledged that now they’ll increase those numbers even higher.

These SEIU members who are gaining coverage and reaching out to others also met with SEIU International President Mary Kay Henry. She thanked them for their hard work toward the union’s goal of reaching out to a total of 2 million people in more than 20 states about the Affordable Care Act in coming months.
