Park Forest, IL—(ENEWSPF)—June 17, 2013. Park Forest’s Main Street Nights kicks off on Wednesday, June 20, last week’s scheduled debut being canceled because of the tumultuous downpour that his our village.

As you may have recently read in eNews Park Forest, Rosemary Piser will be moving to Eugene, Oregon this month. This will be her first move in 35 years so you can imagine the things that have accumulated in her house.

Rosemary is busy. Very, very busy with the move. She will be return to eNews Park Forest, from Oregon, on July 1.

The Board of Trustees met on Monday, June 17, and will meet on June 24 at 7 p.m.  The meetings are held at Village Hall, 350 Victory Drive. Residents are encouraged to attend. Board meetings air live on cable access channels (Channel 4 for Comcast subscribers and Channel 99 for AT&T subscribers) as well as on the Village web site at www.villageofparkforest.com.

Main Street Nights – June Schedule of Events

Grab a blanket, pack a snack and position yourself in the Park Forest DownTown Village Green (Cunningham and Main Streets) for eight free nights of entertainment, rain or shine.   • Wednesday, June 12 – The opening night event featuring Dave Rudolf at the Park Forest Aqua Center was rained out and will be rescheduled.
  • Wednesday, June 19 – Join us at the DownTown Village Green (Cunningham and Main Streets) at 7 p.m. for a martial art performance by Side swipe. Sideswipe Martial Arts based group blends traditional martial arts such as Karate and Tae Kwon Do, with gymnastics and acrobatics to create an extreme high flying display of talent, strength and stamina unlike anything else on the planet. At 7:45 p.m., Carla Prather and Company will bring the essence of pure soul combined with raw talent. Carla Prather and Company embodies true musicianship through their unique sound that permeates the very heart and soul of the audiences that follow them.
  • Wednesday, July 26 – Join us at the DownTown Village Green at 7 p.m. for Ken Schultz, ‘The Flying Fool.’ Ken has been dazzling audiences with his time tested, clean and positive fun that will not offend. Ken uses a symphony of juggling, physical comedy, humor and improvisation. Stunts include fire-eating, bowling ball juggling, and balancing an 8 foot table on his chin. At 7:45 p.m., the Latin group Banda Rika will take the stage with a powerful, versatile and highly entertaining dance show whose musical repertoire consists of Salsa, Merengue, Cambia and Bachata. They’ve been named the Best Suburban Latin Band by Suburban Nightlife.

On Saturday, June 22 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the DownTown Village Green (Cunningham and Main Streets), the Park Forest Family Fitness Fest will focus on helping families live a happier and healthier life. Brought to you by Wright Fit Coaching and the Recreation and Parks Department, the event will feature exercise demonstrations, health screenings, fitness challenges, food, prizes, entertainment and more. Dance Mania – Every Friday During the Month of June

On every Friday night during the month of June from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Dining on the Green, 349 Main Street, Park Forest, you can learn to dance. If you love to dance of just want to get out for the night, we will provide a dance instructor for a different type of dance each Friday. During the first hour, you get lessons and for the remainder of the night, put it into action. We will have a D.J., raffles, and much more. Cost is $5 per week or package rates are available for the entire month. The schedule is:

‘The History of Hollymatic Corporation’ – Sunday June 23

The Park Forest Historical Society will present ‘The History of Hollymatic Corporation’ with speaker Bob Chura on Sunday, June 23 at 2:20 p.m. at Park Forest Village Hall, 350 Victory Drive. Bob ‘the Burger’ Chura, frequently seen on WTTW’s ‘Chicago Tonight,’ will talk about the history of Hollymatic, which had its factory in park Forest at the corner of North Street and Orchard Drive from 1962 through 1982. Chura is the great-grandson of Harry Holly, who founded Hollymatic in 1937. The event is free and open to the public.

Park Forest House Museum

The 1950s Park Forest House Museum at 141 Forest Blvd, Park Forest, is open Wednesday and Saturday 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., the museum can also be open for groups by appointment, at other times. Donation is $5 for adults; children 12 and under free with an adult. Scout and school tours are priced individually. Park Forest Plaza Print for Sale

Annabelle Gould’s print of the Park Forest Plaza is available for sale at the Park Forest House Museum, 141 Forest Boulevard. The vibrant print is from an original watercolor, showing kids and their moms in the Park Forest Plaza, in front of the old Holiday Theatre and Golden Hanger Shop. The print can be purchased at the House Museum during normal hours of operation on Wednesdays and Saturdays or through the Society’s online store on their website at www.parkforesthistory.org. Material World Three Dimensional, Sculptural Artwork – Through July 21    

This exhibit features three dimensional, sculptural artwork made with materials as diverse as the artists who created them.  Fabric, fiber, clay, glass, fiberglass, steel, aluminum and plaster were used by local, regional, national, and international artists to create pieces that range from 3 1/2 inches to 21 feet.  The exhibit will run through July 21, 2013. Park Forest Art Fair T-Shirt Designs Being Solicited – Deadline July 27

For many years, the Park Forest Art Fair created t-shirts, which were sold to exhibiting artists, volunteers, board members and anyone else who wanted them. For the past several years, the practice has fallen by the wayside. This year, for the 58th Annual Park Forest Art Fair, the art fair committee would like to revive the practice; however, it needs a design. Artists who would like to create a design are invited to submit them by Friday, July 27 to:

Summer Musical Theatre Camp to Feature Songs, Dances from the Wonderful Land of Oz – Registration Now in Progress

Follow the Yellow Brick Road to this summer’s Musical Theatre Camp at GSU’s Center for Performing Arts. This year’s camp, from June 17 to 21, takes its inspiration from “The Wizard of Oz” as young participants learn classic songs like “Over the Rainbow” and valuable theater skills. Campers develop a mini-musical based on “The Wizard of Oz” and perform a one-time-only production at the center on Friday, June 21 at 7 p.m. During the camp, students will learn songs, choreography, and scenes from the play. Professional coaches will work with campers on scene study, voice, diction, improvisation, singing and dancing. Musical Theatre Camp is open to children ages 7 to 13. Camp takes place six hours each day, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The cost is $250 for the week; the price of the camp also includes four tickets for the Friday night performance. Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Certificate Course – Registration Now in Progress

Business professionals can learn methods of project planning and statistical tools during the Lean Six Sigma Green Belt Certificate Course offered this summer at GSU. The course will take place at GSU on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon, between July 6 and August 17. Students will learn how to integrate theories of business, statistics, and the elimination of waste to achieve tangible results. Instruction will take place in class and online, and will include projects, discussions, and hand-o9n applications. Participants will be awarded a Six Sigma Green Belt certificate after passing the final exam. This course is ideal for executives, managers, frontline supervisors, business owners, engineers, and practitioners of continuous improvement. Prerequisites are a bachelor’s degree and a basic understanding of mathematics. The cost of the course is $1,500 plus the cost of textbook and software. Dr. Harry Wong to Educate the Educators – Registration in Progress

The definitive voices on classroom management, Dr. Harry Wong and his wife, Dr. Rosemary Wong, will provide important insight, information and strategies to administrators and teachers on June 24 and 25 at the Holiday Inn, 500 Holiday Plaza Drive, Matteson. The workshops are sponsored by GSU’ Metropolitan Institute for Leadership in Education (MILE) of the College of Education in collaboration with Louisiana State University College of Human Sciences and Education. The first day of the workshop series is geared toward helping school and district administrators and board members, “How to Create an Effective School in Less than Two Years” will be held on June 24 from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Wongs will lead a day full of ready-to-implement, practical plans to improve student achievement at very little cost. On June 25 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Wongs will share strategies on what teachers can do to improve student achievement in “How to Be an Effective and Successful Teacher.” This workshop will be beneficial to teachers, administrators, staff developers, professors, and pre-service teachers. Summer 2013 Astronomy Workshops – Registration Now in Progress

GSU is offering three one credit hour astronomy workshops at the Merrillville Community Planetarium, Pierce Middle School, 199 East 70th Avenue, Merrillville, Indiana. Job Search Assistance Every Tuesday at GSU

The Mobile Workforce Center’s mobile unit will be at GSU every Tuesday, from 9:30 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., parked near the university’s front entrance. Center services include resume development, access to online job boards and websites, instruction in how to conduct an online job search and improve keyboarding skills, and assistance of staff. The center is equipped with 11 computer stations with Internet access, printer, and copy machines, and is wheelchair accessible. Services are free and available to residents in all counties. SSC’s Continuing Education Department is offering courses to help fill the summer days with activities that will entertain and challenge children and young adults. SSC’s Business & Career Institute will present a Breakfast with BCI Workshop facilitated by Allen Babiarz titled ‘Writing for Social Media’ on Wednesday, June 19 from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. at the University & College Center, 16333 S. GSU’s Psychology Department is offering free psychotherapy services to members of the community. Conversations with a psychotherapist can help people cope with depression, anxiety, relationship issues, stress, and life transition problems. Every Wednesday morning through June 19 from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m., those ages 11 through adult can follow the forest’s spring changes, enjoy light exercise and experience nature firsthand on Thorn Creek’s winding trails. Visions and Voices: A Benefit for Thorn Creek Woods – Sunday, June 23

Visions and Voices: A Benefit for Thorn Creek Woods will take place on Sunday, June 23 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is $5. This open house at Thorn Creek Nature Center will feature local artist Marikay Peter Witlock and musician Patricia Caldwell. Meet the artist who was inspired by the Nature Center to create ‘Prairie Chapel’ an original graphic drawing featuring the iconic 1860s church. Enjoy songs of inspiration and humor by Patricia Caldwell. Hammered dulcimer musician Jerry Santoni will evoke memories of long-ago with his poignant melodies. There will be refreshments and a silent auction. Proceeds of sales of ‘Prairie Chapel’ prints and donations will benefit the Nature Preserve. ‘Fire Flies Night Hike’ – Registration Required by Wednesday, June 25

On Friday, June 28 from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., those of all ages are invited to the ‘Fireflies Night Hike.’ Let the magic of ‘lightning bugs’ entrance you on this summer night adventure. Come and discover why fireflies flash back and forth to each other. We’ll hunt for the little phosphorescent insects, and learn why they developed their nocturnal signals, how they emit their glow, and what their coded messages mean. Participants should be prepared to walk over 1 mile outdoors on natural surface trails across uneven terrain. The event is free and open to the public. ‘Women of the Woods: A Nature Retreat’ – Registration Required by Thursday, June 27

On Saturday, June 29 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., adult women are invited to ‘Women of the Woods: A Nature Retreat.’ Celebrate the beauty of the summer solstice woods in this program for women only. Discover the naturalist in you as you explore the woods, observing birds and insects, identifying trees and flowers, following tracks and much more. Participants will enjoy a hike on natural surface trails over uneven terrain for approximately 2 miles.  There is a fee of $5 per person. Registration is required by Thursday, June 27. Experience the Thorn Creek Nature Center

Thorn Creek Nature Center is housed in a historic building, originally Immanuel Lutheran Church of Matteson, Illinois built in 1862, and later Village Bible Church of Park Forest. A gothic frame country church, its notable architectural features include curved ceiling, tongue-and-groove paneling and a raised pulpit. Its current attractions are displays of the preserve’s flora and fauna, a bird feeder viewing area, Eugene E. Schwartz reference library and an expanded children’s section. Park Forest Farmers’ Market 40th Season – Every Saturday Through October 26

Every Saturday morning through October 26th, you’ll find that the Park Forest Farmers’ Market has something for everyone. The Market opens at 7 a.m. and ends at noon.  Rain or shine, come and enjoy fresh produce, bakery items, gourmet cheeses, and herbs. In addition, your favorite local businesses set up shop under their awnings with artwork, garden ornaments, candles and more! Come to the Market and see what’s new and take time to meet new friends, chat, browse, have breakfast or lunch, and shop around.  Local civic groups are welcome to give demonstrations, hold fundraisers and other small events at the Market for no charge but must be registered in advance. Park Forest Baseball (PFBB)

Park Forest Baseball Community Baseball Outing – Wednesday, June 19

Park Forest Youth Baseball is coordinating a community baseball game outing for Wednesday evening, June 19th to go see the Windy City Thunderbolts take on the Florence Freedom from Florence, Kentucky. Bulldogs Baseball & Basketball Camps Coming to SSC – Camp Begins June 17

The SSC Baseball and Basketball Programs are accepting registrations for their summer camps in June. The 2013 Bulldog Baseball Camp will take place from Monday, June 17 through Thursday, June 20 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon at Bulldog Stadium. The camp is designed for kids ages 6 – 14, and is directed by Head Coach Steve Ruzich and current players. The cost of the camp is $75 per camper for all four days of instruction. Each camper should have gym shoes, spikes, sweat clothes, and bring their own equipment. The Bulldog Basketball Program will host two camps – a Championship Basketball Camp from June 24 through 27 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and a Championship Shooting Camp from June 17 through 20 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the SSC Fitness Center. The camps are designed for boys and girls ages 7 – 17, and will be directed by Head Coach John Pigatti and players from the 2013 Bulldog Basketball Team. The cost of the Shooting Camp is $60 and the Basketball Camp is $100, with a special price of $140 for both camps. Campers will need shorts, basketball shoes, and a T-shirt or practice uniform. Food and refreshments will be available for purchase every day of the camps. The main goal of these camps is to provide each individual with the opportunity to become a better player and to have some fun along the way. In order to accomplish these goals, the emphasis will be on the fundamentals of basketball. South Suburban Family Shelter Used Cell Phone Collection Drive

South Suburban Family Shelter (SSFS) is seeking cell phone donations for their ongoing fundraising program. Proceeds from the collection fund the critical programs and services provided to families who experience domestic violence.
