Firefighting Grant To Assist 18 South Suburban Departments, Including Park Forest


Washington, DC—(ENEWSPF)—July 7, 2014. Congresswoman Robin Kelly announced today that the Homewood Fire Department was awarded a $1.8 million federal grant that will benefit 18 south suburban fire departments. Homewood applied for the grant on behalf of the region’s joint dispatch center and was supported in its efforts by Congresswoman Robin Kelly.

The funding will assist with the purchase of portable radios and firefighter training. Made available through the Department of Homeland Security, the grant will also benefit the Village of Park Forest.

“The tragic loss of life at the World Trade Center on 9-11 painfully taught us that advanced, reliable communications is crucial to the safety and survival of our firefighters,” Rep. Kelly said. “These funds will improve communication and increase the safety of our firefighters here in the South Suburbs as they risk their lives to save others.”

Homewood Mayor Richard Hofeld thanked both Rep. Kelly and Sen. Dick Durbin for strongly supporting the grant application. “I’m appreciative and grateful to Congresswoman Kelly and to Senator Durbin for their efforts in securing the grant. The monies will assist 18 communities purchase portable radios, increase training and improve the safety of our firefighters, which is paramount.”

The grant will be administered by the Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency in cooperation with the U.S. Fire Administration.
