Congresswoman Kelly Amendment to Increase Diversity in Manufacturing Passes House

WASHINGTON—(ENEWSPF)—September 16, 2014. The U.S. House of Representatives on Monday night passed H.R. 2996, the Revitalize American Manufacturing and Innovation Act, which included an amendment by Congresswoman Robin Kelly that would increase diversity in the manufacturing sector.

H.R. 2996 aims to boost American manufacturing competitiveness, stimulate innovation and accelerate workforce development. Kelly’s amendment requires that these efforts include women and minority owned and small and mid-sized businesses to ensure that the businesses stimulating new innovation in manufacturing represent the diversity of the communities they serve.

“Our country needs strong domestic manufacturing policy to maintain our global competitiveness. And as we work to revitalize American manufacturing and create highly-skilled, good-paying jobs, we must ensure that all communities across the country benefit from the boom,” Kelly said. “That means making sure that women and minority owned and small and mid-sized manufacturers have the opportunity to expand their capacity and that colleges and universities graduate a diverse workforce that is trained to fill advanced manufacturing jobs here at home.”

H.R. 2996 directs the Secretary of Commerce to support the establishment of institutes across the country dedicated to improving U.S. competitiveness in manufacturing, increasing domestic production and accelerating the development of an advanced manufacturing workforce. The bill is part of the House Democrats’ “Make It In America” agenda, a plan to support job creation today and in the future by encouraging businesses to make products and innovate in the U.S. and sell to the rest of the world.

The Revitalize American Manufacturing and Innovation Act, including Kelly’s amendment, passed the House and will now be considered in the Senate.
