Congresswoman Robin Kelly Calls on Gov. Rauner to Greenlight Southland Projects

Leads letter signed by 36 bi-partisan Southland officials urging support for Third Airport, Illiana

MATTESON –(ENEWSPF)—January 21, 2015. Congresswoman Robin Kelly (IL-02) today sent a letter to Governor Bruce Rauner urging him to greenlight several Southland infrastructure projects, including the Third Airport and the Illiana Expressway, to help bolster Illinois’ economy, create jobs and generates millions in additional tax revenue for the state.

The letter, signed by 36 Democratic and Republican officials from Chicago and Cook, Will and Kankakee counties, outlines the tremendous economic development potential of the Third Airport and the Illiana Expressway, and urges the Governor to support their development. It also highlights the boon that the Obama Presidential Library and a national park in the Pullman community would be for the region and the state.

Governor Rauner recently put a halt on these projects pending further review by the state. The letter points to the efforts of federal, state and local government officials in working with private investors on each project and urges Governor Rauner to continue the state’s commitment to redeveloping the Southland.

“This letter shows a united Southland working together to improve opportunities not only for the region but for the state as a whole. These projects would be largely funded with private dollars and yet pay huge dividends for the state,” Kelly said. “Many of these are well along in the planning process.  We could begin all of them in the next few years, and even complete some of them by then. I urge the Governor to lend his support to this process and to be a partner in our progress.”
