WASHINGTON, DC –(ENEWSPF)—January 27, 2015. Rep. Jan Schakowsky released the following statement in recognition of International Holocaust Remembrance Day:
“I join today in recognizing International Holocaust Remembrance Day – the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, where more than a million innocent people were brutally murdered. It is a day when the international community honors the memories of all those lost to the terrible atrocities of the Holocaust. We recognize the survivors whose lives were unalterably changed, many of whom came to the 9th Congressional district of Illinois.
As we honor those who fell victim to the Nazi regime’s violent crimes against humanity, we must act to stop genocide wherever it occurs.
We must remain diligent. Today, 70 years later, anti-Semitism continues in many parts of the world. In all parts of the world, religious intolerance threatens individuals and entire communities. As a member of the Tom Lantos Human Rights Committee, I join with those who urge decisive action to combat hate wherever and whenever it materializes.
I will continue to work hard each and every day to promote peace and freedom of religion. Persecution cannot be tolerated, whether based on religion, nationality, political opinion or anything else. We can best honor the memories of those who were lost by telling their stories and ensuring that these horrific events are never repeated.”
