Rep. Jan Schakowsky Joins Effort to Increase Nonprofit Security Grant Program Funding to Protect Synagogues, Temples from Violent Extremists

CHICAGO – (ENEWSPF)—March 30, 2015. Rep. Jan Schakowsky joined over three dozen members of Congress writing the House Appropriations Committee to request $25 million for Nonprofit Security Grant Program funding. These funds would aid those who strive to secure Synagogues, Temples and other institutions from hateful attacks. Rep. Schakowsky released the following statement on this issue:

“Synagogues, Temples and other religious facilities are particularly vulnerable to violence and vandalism given the troubling rise of anti-Semitic activities seen in recent years.  Shocking incidents like the 2011 firebombing of a Temple in New Jersey and the April 2014 shooting at a Jewish Community Center in Kansas where three were killed – demonstrate just how dangerous extremists can be when they bring violence into a place of worship.  In Chicago’s Rogers Park neighborhood, which I represent, vandals desecrated a Synagogue in December 2014 with anti-Semitic language – sadly these incidents continue to occur.

The Nonprofit Security Grant Program provides an opportunity for at-risk nonprofit institutions – including Synagogues, Temples and other religious facilities – to apply for resources to help keep them safe from violence.   I will continue to collaborate with the Appropriations Committee and ensure that this funding is included in the budget for Fiscal Year 2016. I commend the men and women who are focused on protecting their congregations and communities. These funds would help them increase safety as we remain vigilante and hope to prevent attacks in the future.”
