CHICAGO–(ENEWSPF)–April 24, 2015.  Mayor Rahm Emanuel today attended the closing for 176 property sales in East Garfield Park as part of the Large Lot Pilot Program launched by the city in March 2014. The Mayor congratulated residents on their new properties that will become housing, green spaces, private and community gardens. Over 400 lots were available in the East Garfield Park neighborhood, enabling homeowners, block clubs and non-profit groups in the community to purchase City-owned land for $1 per parcel.

“The success of the Large Lot program shows that Chicago’s residents are eager to take ownership of their neighborhoods and the revitalization of the communities in which they live and work,” said Mayor Emanuel. “As with Englewood before it, the community in East Garfield has proven that there is a strong desire in neighborhoods across Chicago to return vacant, City-owned land to productive use.”

East Garfield Park is the second neighborhood to close property sales as a part of the Large Lot Pilot Program, part of the city’s Five Year Housing Plan, which will invest $1.3 billion in spending to create, improve, and preserve more than 41,000 units of housing.

Applications for the Austin Large Lots are currently being processed by the Department of Planning and Development and closing is expected this summer, following approval by City Council.
