Conservationists to Gather on April 24 at DePaul University for Screening of ‘Green Fire’ Film


Earth Week events include presentations on green business, gardening

CHICAGO–(ENEWSPF)–April 17, 2014.  Conservation biologist and film director Curt Meine will speak at DePaul University after a screening of his documentary, “Green Fire,” as part of a series of Earth Week events on campus. The film documents the work of Aldo Leopold, an ecologist who many consider the father of wildlife management in the U.S. The screening and a panel discussion will be held April 24 from 6 to 8 p.m. on DePaul’s Lincoln Park Campus in McGowan South, Room 108, 1110 W. Belden Ave. The event is free and open to the public.

Meine earned his undergraduate degrees in English and history from DePaul and now serves as director for conservation biology and history with the Center for Humans and Nature. Other experts in environmental preservation will join Meine on the panel, including Laurel Ross of Chicago Wilderness, Gavin Van Horn of the Center for Humans and Nature, and Shawn Bailey with the DePaul Department of Environmental Science and Studies.

The Organic Gardner
Jeanne Nolan, founder the Organic Gardener, will discuss strategies for growing a successful organic vegetable garden. This event is sponsored by the Public Policy Studies Department, Department of Environmental Science and Studies, and DePaul Sustainability Network.

Planting Workshop
Want to do some gardening but have limited space to grow your greenery? Learn how to plant wheat grass and alfalfa sprouts during this workshop sponsored by the Ray Meyer Fitness and Recreation Center and DePaul’s Urban Farming Organization.
Date: April 21 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Coleman Connection: Food Entrepreneurs
Chicago entrepreneurs will discuss how their businesses focus on “green” food initiatives. This event will be sponsored by the Coleman Entrepreneurship Center and DePaul Urban Farming Organization.

Blue Ecologies: Science, Aesthetics, and the Creatures of the Abyss
Stacy Alaimo, a professor of English at the University of Texas at Arlington, will discuss her new book project regarding ocean ecologies. This event will be sponsored by the DePaul Humanities Center and the Institute for Nature and Culture.

Fair Trade and Sustainable Fashion Show
DePaul’s Fair Trade Committee will host Fashion Revolution, an organization that raises awareness about fair labor practices and sourcing in the garment industry, from cotton production to the people sewing your clothes.

Impact Entrepreneurship & Innovation
Experts will discuss ventures in Chicago that are using entrepreneurship and innovation to tackle social and environmental challenges. Panelists will include Claire Tramm of Effortless Energy, Nicole DelSasso of Farm Energy and Patrick Murphy of DePaul’s Social Enterprise Collaborative. Nisha Sutaria from the Campaign for Better Banking will moderate.

Recycling drive for household hazardous waste and electronics
The Environmental Health and Safety Office invites the DePaul community as well as the general public to bring their household hazardous waste and unwanted electronics to be disposed of and recycled safely.
Date: April 25 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Location: Welcome Center parking lot at Sheffield Avenue and Montana Street (Lincoln Park Campus)
