CHICAGO–(ENEWSPF)–November 6, 2014.  Mayor Rahm Emanuel cut the ribbon today at the Mary Lyon Elementary School playground and turf field. The City of Chicago has completed renovations at 175 playgrounds in the last two years and 55 turf fields across the city since Mayor Emanuel took office in 2011.

“We continue to make the critical investments necessary across the City of Chicago to ensure that every child in the city will be within a ten minute walk of a world class park or playground,” said Mayor Emanuel. “Each playground and turf field will strengthen communities and provide our children with a fun, safe place to play in every neighborhood.”

The Mary Lyon school community and Principal Cliff Gabor requested an artificial turf field on the southwest of the Lyon Elementary School building to alleviate flooding, soil compaction, and overuse issues. In addition to city funding for this project, the school successfully won an IDCEO grant from the State if Illinois.

The improvements include a new playground with poured-in-place rubber surfacing, a U-10 artificial turf field soccer field with barrier nets, new concrete walkways, ornamental fence improvements, drainage improvements, and accessibility upgrades.
