DVD Players Recalled by Wal-Mart Due to Fire Hazard


WASHINGTON, D.C.–(ENEWSPF)–August 20, 2009.  The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Name of Product: Durabrand DVD Players

Units: About 1.5 Million

Importer: Wal-Mart Stores Inc., of Bentonville, Ark.

Hazard: The DVD players can overheat, posing a fire and burn hazard to consumers.

Incidents/Injuries: Wal-Mart has received 12 reports of DVD players overheating, five of which have resulted in fires that caused property damage. No injuries have been reported.

Description: This recall involves a single DVD player with a remote control. The device is silver colored and has a U-shaped opening at the top to insert the DVD.

Sold exclusively at: Wal-Mart stores nationwide from January 2006 through July 2009 for about $29.

Manufactured in: China

Remedy: Consumers should immediately stop using the product and return it to the nearest Wal-Mart for a full refund.
