Congresswoman Duckworth Celebrates Independence Day and Honors Troops

Washington, DC–(ENEWSPF)–July 3, 2013. Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth (IL-08)  released this statement today in celebration of the 4th of July holiday:

“All Americans should take some time to think about why we celebrate Independence Day in the first place. We celebrate because our brave ancestors knew our country had the potential to be different. We are a country that stands up for what we believe in. We cherish freedom and liberty above all things – and even today, send our brave men and women overseas to protect these important values.

Independence Day is a good time to remember our Veterans. The unemployment rate for Veterans who have served in the military since 2001 is nearly 10%. That number is simply unacceptable. That is why I introduced the Troop Talent Act of 2013. Recently, the House Armed Services Committee passed an amendment as part of the FY14 National Defense Authorization Act that includes provisions of my bill. This amendment will make it easier for our Service men and women to have access to higher education and career opportunities that match their skill sets. This will also enable Veterans to make the transition to the private sector more easily and help our businesses thrive at the same time.

I encourage all of us to keep our heroes in our hearts and minds this weekend.”
