Lt. Governor and 2 Other Higher Education Advocates Receive CCE Champions Award
Tinley Park, IL–(ENEWSPF)–July 12, 2013. Approximately 400 participants attended the third annual statewide College Changes Everything Conference in support of Illinois’s efforts to reach Goal 2025, increasing the proportion of adults in Illinois with high quality degrees and credentials to 60 percent by the year 2025. The annual event draws participants from throughout the state and across the country.
In addition to a keynote address delivered by Greg Darnieder, U.S. Secretary of Education’s Senior Adviser on the College Access Initiative, interest sessions took place throughout the day providing attendees in-depth information, practical ideas and specific strategies to address important issues including:
• Student Support Services
• Retention
• Remediation
• Dual Degree/Dual Credit
• College Readiness
• Career Development
• Civic and Municipal Engagement
• Students with Special Needs
Conference speakers included Lt. Governor Shelia Simon, P-20 Council Chair and ISAC Vice Chair Sen. Miguel del Valle and a panel session featuring leaders from the Illinois Student Assistance Commission, the Illinois Board of Higher Education, the Illinois Community College Board, the Illinois State Board of Education, and the Federation of Independent Illinois Colleges and Universities.
Recipients of the College Changes Everything Champion Award have demonstrated outstanding leadership on key state education issues: accessibility, affordability and completion.
2013 Awardees:
• Illinois Lt. Governor Shelia Simon – Illinois’s point person on education reform and increasing college completion
• Elena Herrera – Women Employed – advocates for expanding education and employment opportunities for women
• The Elgin Community College Alliance for College Readiness – nationally recognized collaboration focused on improving K-12 curriculum and programs to more effectively help students plan and prepare for higher education.
