New York, NY–(ENEWSPF)–September 24, 2013. Today, President Bill Clinton, former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, and Chelsea Clinton opened the ninth Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting organized around the theme “Mobilizing for Impact.” Over the course of three days, more than 1,000 international leaders and innovators will convene to explore how cross-sector partnerships can create sustainable improvements in living conditions for people worldwide. Today, speakers discussed how philanthropic and public funds are still essential to fully resolve issues that cannot be addressed by markets alone.
“As CGI’s ninth Annual Meeting begins, I am once again profoundly impressed by the dynamic group of leaders from around the world who chose to be here today,” said Chelsea Clinton. “The dedication and passion of CGI members from the public, private and non-sectors alike remind us that, when it comes to addressing global challenges, we are all in this together. In 2013, The Rockefeller Foundation committed to drive action towards building worldwide urban resiliency through the 100 Resilient Cities Centennial Challenge (100RC Challenge). One hundred cities will be supported in hiring a Chief Resiliency Officer and through partnerships with public and private organizations, will advance resiliency efforts in policy, community and social resilience, infrastructure development, and technology.
The Black Church and HIV: The Social Justice Imperative
Commitment by: Gilead Sciences, Inc.

In 2013, Gilead Sciences and the NAACP committed to significantly scale up their initiative designed to enlist and train nearly 3,000 Black faith leaders to serve as change agents to address the disproportionately severe impact of HIV on African Americans.
Improving Africa’s Neglected Food Crops

The knowledge and availability of these “orphan crops” allow African farmers to grow highly nutritious, productive, and robust crops, creating surpluses for the market.
Innovation Labs: Enabling Generations of Young Innovators

In 2013, the British Council committed to scale up the Premier Skills Program into eight new countries and to promote sustainability where the program is already running. To date, this expansion has brought the program to new communities in need, training hundreds of community soccer coaches, and engaging with thousands of at-risk young people by giving them access to opportunities to better themselves and their communities.

Building a Better Kibera

In 2013, Starkey Hearing Foundation in partnership with Shining Hope for Communities (SHOFCO) committed to establish community-based hearing health care in Kenya’s largest slum, Kibera. The aim of this commitment is to build capacity for health care by embedding the Foundation’s approach to community-based hearing health services to an already well-run clinic that serves approximately 40,000 patients per year. Through its partnership with SHOFCO, Starkey will provide 2,000 hearing aids per year over the course of three years to the hearing impaired in Kibera.
HUGinsure: World’s First Social Impact Insurance Platform

In 2013, Dalberg, Hollard Insurance, and Aon Benfield committed to creating HUGinsure, the world’s first specialist insurance underwriting platform, utilizing tried and tested rating methodologies and risk management principles to underwrite social impact projects. The HUGinsure platform, within the Lloyd’s of London market place, will accelerate over $400 million towards development efforts by 2018.
First Responders: A New Approach to Resilience
Commitment by: International Medical Corps
In 2013, the International Medical Corps (IMC) committed to expanding its “Health Care through Training” program to reach 112,000 additional women in high-risk communities in Africa. The program combines reproductive/maternal health, mental health, nutrition, and improved access to water and sanitation services through peer-to-peer education, training of frontline health care workers and by increasing the capacity of health care systems.
Spring Sprouts Kitchens: Nutrition in Rural China
Commitment by: Amway International, Inc.

In 2013, the Amway Corporation committed to combat malnutrition among children of Chinese migrant workers through the construction of Spring Sprouts Kitchens and the delivery of much-needed meals to these children. The project aims to build 2,000 kitchens by 2015, and has committed to hiring, training, and monitoring kitchen staff; sourcing local food; and providing balanced, nutritious, daily lunches for the children.
Zero Preventable Deaths by 2020 – Patient Safety Movement
Commitment by: Masimo Foundation
Partner: The Patient Safety Movement
In 2013, the Masimo Foundation committed to confront the problem of preventable patient deaths in the United States by donating $10 million to seed the creation of the Patient Safety Movement Foundation to reduce healthcare costs and improve safety in hospitals through an annual summit, year-round meetings, and educational efforts.
Health Infrastructure to Combat Cholera in Haiti

In 2013, MASS Design Group committed to address the current cholera epidemic spreading across Haiti by designing ten Health and Hydration Centers (HHC) in Port-au-Prince which will include primary health care centers, chlorinated water distribution, and on-site wastewater treatment facilities to prevent recontamination.
Healthy Connections: Technology Promoting Family Health

In 2013, Pro Mujer, Sesame Workshop, the Mayo Clinic, and Pfizer committed to leverage their core competencies to prevent chronic disease in Latin America, by promoting healthy habits, among more than 271,000 Pro Mujer clients and their families, and by enhancing the medical services delivered to them in Pro Mujer’s clinics.

NGO 2.0 Shaping the Next Generation of Social Entrepreneurs

In 2012, the Hult Prize committed to help launch a new wave of student social entrepreneurs. Six start-up teams were selected from more than 1,000 students from over 130 countries and spent this summer at the Hult Accelerator, a world-class center for innovation in Boston. To date, each team has successfully launched pilot projects focused on bringing food security to urban slums. The six start-ups are pitching their ideas at the 2013 CGI Annual Meeting, where President Clinton and CGI Meeting attendees will select and award the winning project with $1 million in seed funding.
Addressing Harmful Practices: FGC and Child Marriage

In 2013, United Postcode Lotteries committed to work towards bringing an end to harmful practices affecting girls and young women, specifically child marriage and female genital cutting (FGC), in the Gambia, Kenya, and Tanzania.
