SEIU President Henry: HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius Served with Honor and Distinction in Bringing Affordable, Quality, Healthcare and Landmark Protections to Hard-working Americans

Lauds Partnership with HHS under Sebelius on Recent Insurance Enrollment Push Successes That Give Many More People a Shot at the Middle Class

WASHINGTON, DC–(ENEWSPF)–April 11, 2014.  Mary Kay Henry, president of the Service Employees International Union, issued this statement about the news that Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius is resigning:

“Secretary Sebelius served her country for five years with honor and distinction and was an indefatigable force in transforming our healthcare system and driving desperately needed improvements that mean more hard-working people can now pursue their hopes and dreams of reaching the middle class.

“Thanks to her unwavering vision, the benefits and robust protections of the law are leveling the playing field so that no matter where you work or what you do for a living, Americans now have a fair shot at living a longer, healthier life.

“Secretary Sebelius played an instrumental role in changing the lives of not only newly insured working people, but she also changed the lives of another 100 million Americans who benefit from the Affordable Care Act’s protections. These protections mean that insurance companies can no longer deny coverage to people with pre-existing conditions, charge women more and cut off coverage when people are in the middle of costly treatments.

“On behalf of the millions of working people who are living testimony to the trans-formative power of the Affordable Care Act, we offer Secretary Sebelius our deepest gratitude for the breadth and depth of her historic role in serving our country. We welcome and support OMB Director Sylvia Mathews Burwell’s nomination as her successor.”
