CAIR-MI Asks DOJ to Investigate Clerk’s Shooting as Hate Crime

storeFARMINGTON HILLS, MI–(ENEWSPF)–December 15, 2015 – The Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MI) today called on the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) to investigate an incident in Grand Rapids, Mich., in which a store clerk of Indian heritage was called a “terrorist” and shot in the face.

According to police, the robber demanded money from the store worker, led him to a back room where he put the barrel of his rifle into the man’s mouth. The victim reported that the robber called him a “terrorist” and said he used to kill people like him in Iraq.

“We believe the shooting was motivated at least in part by the recent spike in anti-Muslim rhetoric spread by some public figures and by the mass shootings in Paris and San Bernardino,” said CAIR-MI Executive Director Dawud Walid.
