Governors State University Students and Higher Education Coalition to Make Funding Push for Colleges and Universities in Chicago’s Southland at Rally on March 7

Groups Unite to Urge Lawmakers, Governor to Solve Months-Long Funding Stalemate

University Park, IL –(ENEWSPF)—February 29, 2016. Governors State University (GSU) students and local members of the Illinois Coalition to Invest in Higher Education will hold a rally Monday, March 7 at 3:30 p.m., outside GSU’s main entrance to outline what’s at stake in the ongoing funding stalemate and how that is affecting and will affect campuses around the state. GSU is located at 1 University Parkway in University Park.

There is a budget crisis in Illinois creating a crisis in higher education. Illinois public universities have been operating without a budget for nearly nine months. The time is now for legislators and the governor to find a solution for the stalemate over higher education funding as colleges and universities enter their ninth month without a state support.

The rally is co-sponsored by Governors State University’s Student Senate, Prairie Place Hall Council, the Graduate Professional Network and the Illinois Coalition to Invest in Higher Education, a collection of business, labor, and organizations representing public and private colleges and universities coming together to urge immediate action. Illinois universities and colleges have gone without hundreds of millions of dollars in MAP grants and operational funding since July, and aid has not been included in relief packages approved by legislators and the governor since the summer. The Coalition kicked off its push in January with a Statehouse news conference. This local event is one of several around the state designed to raise awareness of the funding crisis and build pressure on policymakers for a solution.
