Rep. Jan Schakowsky Statement on Passage of the Older Americans Act Reauthorization

Washington, DC–(ENEWSPF)–March 21, 2016.  Today, Representative Jan Schakowsky issued the following statement in response to the passage of the Older Americans Act reauthorization:

“As co-chair of the Seniors Task Force and the former executive director of the Illinois State Council of Senior Citizens, I know how critical the Older Americans Act is to senior citizens and their families. That is why I am so pleased that the House today passed S. 192, the Older Americans Act Reauthorization Act. I have joined my Democratic colleagues in pushing for this action and am grateful for the leadership of Ranking Member Robert Scott who worked so hard to make it happen.

The Older Americans Act helps seniors “age in place” with dignity and independence, allowing them to stay in their communities by providing essential nutrition and transportation services. It supports family caregivers and promotes quality services through the Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program. It helps reduce elder abuse, financial exploitation, and neglect. It includes the Senior Community Service Employment Program. I am particularly pleased that S. 192 recognizes the special needs of Holocaust survivors, many of whom live in my district, and will assist providers in serving them better.

It has been ten years since the Older Americans Act was last reauthorized, and today’s action is recognition of its importance to each of our districts. It also comes as we enter the appropriations season and prepare to make specific funding decisions. I have joined many of my colleagues in urging the Appropriations Committee to provide adequate funding for the full range of OAA services. Seniors, and those who work so hard to serve them, deserve our support.”
