On April 20th, 5:00–8:00 PM Central time, residents of six states along the Gulf Coast will gather for the sixth anniversary of the BP Oil Spill and livestream a Town Hall meeting to bring attention to the ongoing human health consequences that have followed the controversial and toxic clean-up operation. Millions of gallons of Corexit dispersants were sprayed on the oil and released at the wellhead as a ‘clean-up’ measure in the aftermath of the worst environmental disaster in U.S. history. Many health experts now believe that the oil-Corexit combination has resulted in far greater toxicity to humans and the environment than oil alone. Local residents, health activists, and experts will hold a Town Hall meeting for community education on chemical exposures, speak-outs, and public outreach.
This event will also mark the launch of an international awareness campaign for populations at-risk to oil-chemical exposures from industrial operations and a soon-to-be-released documentary film called ‘The Rising’. The Rising has brought together a team of Emmy and Academy Award winning filmmakers and will be produced and directed by Mark Manning, director of The Road to Fallujah. The film will detail the personal stories of those experiencing extreme health circumstances following the BP spill and clean-up response, as well as those working to bring public awareness of the human health impacts of oil-chemical exposures. The Town Hall will be moderated by ALERT Director Dr. Riki Ott, a marine toxicologist with first-hand experience of oil spill impacts on people and marine ecosystems, and community leader Lori Bosarge. The Rising film is still in production and is expected to be released into the heart of the 2016 presidential campaign, raising serious questions about the U.S. response to offshore and other oil disasters as well as the use of the dispersant, Corexit, which has been banned by countries like the UK. A crowdfunding campaign will soon launch to attract the funds needed to complete the documentary for international distribution.
