The American Academy of Pediatrics will release its updated policy statement and clinical guidelines on teens and substance use, calling for pediatricians to expand efforts to screen and treat adolescents. The policy statement, “Substance Use Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment,” along with the accompanying clinical guidelines, will be published in the July 2016 Pediatrics (online June 20). The AAP first published a policy statement and clinical guidelines in 2011 that introduced substance use screening, brief intervention and referral to treatment (SBIRT) concepts and terminology. The revised policy statement emphasizes the enormous public health impact of teen substance use, and urges continued research into the most effective intervention strategies. The AAP advocates for preventing and curtailing adolescent substance use as well as working to ensure that access to and services for mental health and substance use disorder treatments are comparable to those meeting general adolescent and adult health care needs.
