In the week ending June 18, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 259,000, a decrease of 18,000 from the previous week’s unrevised level of 277,000. The 4-week moving average was 267,000, a decrease of 2,250 from the previous week’s unrevised average of 269,250.
There were no special factors impacting this week’s initial claims.
This marks 68 consecutive weeks of initial claims below 300,000, the longest streak since 1973.
The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.6 percent for the week ending June 11, unchanged from the previous week’s unrevised rate. The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending June 11 was 2,142,000, a decrease of 20,000 from the previous week’s revised level. The previous week’s level was revised up 5,000 from 2,157,000 to 2,162,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,147,000, a decrease of 4,500 from the previous week’s revised average. The previous week’s average was revised up by 1,250 from 2,150,250 to 2,151,500.
UNADJUSTED DATA
The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 249,160 in the week ending June 18, a decrease of 17,760 (or -6.7 percent) from the previous week. The seasonal factors had expected a decrease of 277 (or -0.1 percent) from the previous week. There were 263,199 initial claims in the comparable week in 2015.
The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 1.5 percent during the week ending June 11, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 1,996,374, an increase of 9,843 (or 0.5 percent) from the preceding week. The seasonal factors had expected an increase of 28,101 (or 1.4 percent) from the previous week. A year earlier the rate was 1.6 percent and the volume was 2,102,652.
The total number of people claiming benefits in all programs for the week ending June 4 was 2,024,240, an increase of 43,167 from the previous week. There were 2,101,392 persons claiming benefits in all programs in the comparable week in 2015.
No state was triggered “on” the Extended Benefits program during the week ending June 4.
Initial claims for UI benefits filed by former Federal civilian employees totaled 702 in the week ending June 11, a decrease of 169 from the prior week. There were 1,069 initial claims filed by newly discharged veterans, unchanged from the preceding week.
There were 7,270 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending June 4, an increase of 136 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 12,959, a decrease of 164 from the prior week.
The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending June 4 were in Alaska (3.2), Puerto Rico (2.9), West Virginia (2.5), Wyoming (2.5), New Jersey (2.3), Connecticut (2.2), Pennsylvania (2.2), California (2.1), Illinois (1.9), Massachusetts (1.8), New Mexico (1.8), and Nevada (1.8).
The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending June 11 were in California (+18,762), Pennsylvania (+6,427), Florida (+1,769), Virginia (+1,417), and Georgia (+1,287), while the largest decreases were in Ohio (-1,101), Missouri (-905), Kentucky (-755), Oklahoma (-449), and Puerto Rico (-356).
