Veteran Tackling Challenges Faced by U.S. Military Veterans to Read From Acclaimed Book on Nov. 7 at Roosevelt University

Odie Lindsey

CHICAGO–(ENEWSPF)–October 31, 2016.   Military veteran and writer Odie Lindsey will read from his new book of short stories about the trials and tribulations that U.S. military veterans face in re-acclimating to society at 5 p.m. on Monday, November 7 at Roosevelt University, 18 S. Michigan Ave., Room 700, Chicago.

A veteran of the first Gulf War, Lindsey has been widely recognized for his stories of struggle by military veterans, many who are women, in his critically acclaimed book, We Come to Our Senses, published in July by W.W. Norton.

“We are proud to welcome Odie Lindsey, whose honest and troubling stories about combat veterans returning home is appropriate and a good way to make us think as we observe Veteran’s Day on November 11,” said Kyle Beachy, interim director of the Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing Program at Roosevelt University.

Examining the crosscurrents of war, gender, sexuality and the South, Lindsey of Nashville, Tenn. is an alumnus of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago’s Master of Fine Arts in Writing program, and also has a master’s in Southern Studies from the University of Mississippi.

His first book, We Come to Our Senses, has been praised for its arch humor that has been likened to the writing of Flannery O’Connor by Kirkus Reviews. The book also has been called “brutal, nuanced and remarkable” by the New York Times and “a dark, sometimes funny and certainly complex collection that tackles important subjects from unexpected angles” by The Rumpus.

Sponsored by Roosevelt’s Creative Writing Program and the University’s Oyez Review literary magazine, the reading is free and open to the public.  For more information, contact Kyle Beachy at [email protected] or 312-341-2221.
