Illinois Handmaids return to say our work is not done
CHICAGO—(ENEWSPF)—October 12, 2017
The Illinois Handmaids from the Thompson Center and Illinois State Fair protests, in conjunction with national efforts of the Handmaid Coalition, will gather at the Federal Plaza, 291 S. Dearborn Street in Chicago at 12 Noon (Local Time) for a national day of action in response to the ongoing policies and actions that are detrimental and contrary to America’s legacy as a leader in human rights and to the democratic process. Inspired by the haunting imagery of “The Handmaids Tale,” groups across the nation will meet simultaneously in an effort to increase visibility and awareness to the extreme and dangerous policies, legislation, and decisions made by the current administration, the GOP, and many state legislatures throughout the course of 2017.
We are organizing in a national demonstration decrying actions and orders of both the federal and state governments in many spheres. These include, but are not limited to: the continued assault on reproductive freedom, as evidenced by the recent 20 week abortion ban passing the US House of Representatives, Trump’s weakening of ObamaCare’s birth control mandate, and the attempt to repeal HB 40 in the Illinois General Assembly; the fight against human rights of the LGBT community, as in the Department of Justice arguing against workplace protections for LGBT persons; the continued degradation and defamation of people of color made clear through the condemnation of NFL player protests; the prospect of the demise of DACA which threatens to throw thousands of DREAMERs and their families into turmoil, and countless others.

About Handmaid Coalition: Handmaid Coalition was created for a singular reason: to combat misogyny and oppression in legislation and government policy targeting the disenfranchised groups society would seek to “other.” Through organizing, coordination with existing groups, lobbying, and protesting, we seek to expose, confront, and address oppressive and repressive politicians, policies, and actions.
