When it comes to postseason success in women’s soccer, Prairie State College (PSC) historically has not had much in which to hang its collective hat.
Until now that is.
Freshman midfielder Lysette Garcia’s (Munster H.S., Ind.) penalty kick marker in the 11th minute Sunday, proved to be the lone tally of the match as the Pioneers held off a tough Morton squad for a 1-0 NJCAA Region IV Quarterfinal victory.
The win represents the first in PSC women’s postseason soccer history.
The triumph also pushed the Pioneers’ overall record to 6-7-2 overall.
“Today’s win was big for us,” PSC head coach Erik Moreno said. “We knew Morton was a well-coached team and they would present a great challenge to us. I’m proud of our girls because they met that challenge and at the end of the day, our season continues and we are a step closer to achieving our goal.
“The women knew the historical significance in this game and we are extremely happy for them. They deserve this win and I know they are hungry for more.”
PSC goalkeeper Edna Calvillo (Hammond H.S., Ind.) and the PSC defense stood tall throughout the 79 minutes following Garcia’s goal. Calvillo made three stops in the tilt.
Sunday’s victory came exactly one year to the day that the Panthers eliminated the Pioneers from postseason action following a 2-0 win.
Prairie State now moves onto the semifinals and will play a yet to be determined opponent on Wednesday at a yet to be determined site.
