University Park, IL–(ENEWSPF)– Governors Sate University in University Park begins a month-long celebration of African American culture and history with a series of musical, artistic, and educational events designed to entertain and inform.
The celebration begins with “Drumming Experience” a rousing demonstration of how drumming can be an art form by the Umoja People Cultural Arts Program. This event takes place on February 3, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., in the Hall of Governors.
Three open forums provide an opportunity for participants to discuss the issues of living with oneself and living together. “Let’s Talk Diversity” will be held on February 5, from 5 to 6 p.m., in Engbretson Hall. “First Generation College Experience” will be held on February 17, from 5 to 6 p.m., in E-Lounge.
A screening and discussion of the film “King of Bingo” will be held on February 10, from 6 to 7 p.m., in room B2203. The Motown Sock Hop will have everyone dancing on February 11, from 2 to 5 p.m., in the Cafeteria Annex.
“Comicpalooza,” a performance by comedians who will have people laughing at life and each other on February 13, at 7 p.m., in The Center for Performing Arts. Tickets are available at the door. The show contains adult content.
The celebration continues with the African American Read-In on February 16, from 6 to 8 p.m., in Sherman Hall. Guest readers share passages from their favorite African American authors. The hall will be filled with prose and poetry that inspires and entertains.
On February 26, “Steppin’ into Black History” will showcase steppin’, an improvisational form of dancing unique to African Americans. Participants are encouraged and watchers are welcome for the show, which is from 4 to 6 p.m., in the Cafeteria Annex.
The final event commemorating Black history Month at GSU is the presentation of “Brothers in the Kitchen” an original play by GSU student Adriene Farmer of University Park, on February 27, at 7 p.m., in Sherman Hall. Tickets are available at the door.
