Early Voting Wk 1: Thornton, Rich, Northfield Twps Top Turnout


Cook County , IL–(ENEWSPF)– Thornton Township residents turned out to vote in greatest numbers during the first week of Early Voting, Clerk David Orr announced today.

About 4,400 residents of south suburban Thornton Township cast ballots, followed by residents of Rich (3,791), Northfield (3,312), Wheeling(3,180)and Orland (3,049), respectively. Suburban Cook County voters can choose any of the 44 voting locations, but many voted close to home. The five most popular sites were: Orland Park, Matteson, South Holland, Wheeling and Evanston.

Altogether,52,848suburban Cook County voters cast ballots between Oct. 13-19,greater than the total turnout for the entire Early Voting period before the February primary. Saturday was the busiest day, with 9,674 voters at the polls.

To accommodate the crowds, Clerk Orr has dispatched more voting equipment, computers and staff where possible.

"Early Voting is a tremendous hit,so that means there may be lines at some locations," Orr said.

Early Voting takes place seven days a week and, unlike absentee voting, requires no excuse from voters. Early voters are required to bring government-issued photo ID with them when voting early, and all Early Voting is done on touch screen voting equipment.

Grace Period Registration Ends Tomorrow

Eligible suburban residents who missed the regular voter registration deadline have just one more day to take advantage of grace period registration, when they can register and vote in person from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Clerk’s downtown Chicago office (69 W. Washington, Fifth Floor) or at one of the Clerk’s five suburban mini-centers:

  • North suburbs: Skokie Courthouse, 5600 W. Old Orchard Road, Room 149;
  • NW suburbs: Rolling Meadows Courthouse, 2121 Euclid Ave., Room 238;
  • West suburbs: Whitcomb Building (near Maywood Courthouse), 1311 Maybrook Square, Room 109, Maywood;
  • South suburbs: Markham Courthouse, 16501 S. Kedzie Ave., Room 238;
  • SW suburbs: Bridgeview Courthouse, 10220 S. 76th Ave., Room 238.

Registrants must who two pieces of identification to register. Immediately after signing up to vote, registrants use touch screen voting equipment to cast their ballot. Grace period registrants are not allowed to vote at the polls on Election Day or at any Early Voting site, where all voters also vote on touch screens.
