Governor Quinn Announces Transportation Investments as Part of Vision to Drive Chicago’s Southland Forward

$3.4 Million in Investments Will Help Local Governments Fund Road Projects; Part of Regional Plan That Includes South Suburban Airport and Illiana Expressway

TINLEY PARK–(ENEWSPF)–October 15, 2013. Governor Pat Quinn yesterday addressed the Chicago Southland Chamber of Commerce and outlined his economic vision for the south suburbs of Chicago, which includes creating thousands of jobs building the Illiana Expressway and South Suburban Airport. Governor Quinn also announced $3.4 million in capital investments for local governments in south suburban communities and Kankakee County.

“When we invest in the south suburbs, the entire state of Illinois grows stronger,” Governor Quinn said. “By building the Illiana Expressway and South Suburban Airport, and continuing to make historic capital investments throughout the region, we are creating thousands of jobs and building a stronger economy for the next generation.”

The $3.4 million announced today is part of the fourth in a series of annual grants that have come to municipalities for local transportation projects under the Illinois Jobs Now! program since 2010. The projects will be selected and managed locally, with the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) providing oversight. The funds from his Illinois Jobs Now! capital construction program can be used to repair municipal, township and county infrastructure and are in addition to the annual Motor Fuel Tax revenues these municipalities are scheduled to receive this year.

The Illiana Expressway will be a 47-mile access controlled highway that extends from I-55 in Illinois on the west to I-65 in Indiana on the east. When built, the Illiana Corridor Project will create an invaluable regional asset for the south suburbs, the state and the broader Midwest, promoting and supporting the business environment, workforce, local and global economy and quality of life. Potential economic benefits include the creation of more than 9,000 construction jobs and thousands of long-term jobs.

The South Suburban Airport will serve as the third major Chicago-area airport in the south suburbs and has been a key priority of Governor Quinn since 2009. Building the global transportation hub will create more than 11,000 construction jobs and as many as 14,000 long-term jobs after it becomes operational.

In addition to the Illinois Jobs Now! funds announced today, local governments in the south suburban area and Kankakee County will receive approximately $19.6 million in Motor Fuel Tax funds this year.
