University Park, IL-(ENEWSPF)- Governors State University (GSU) is bringing together university and community college faculty and administrators from Washington State to Florida, and many places in between to study GSU’s nationally recognized approach to seamless transfer from the community college to university graduation.

At a time when higher education is under fire, Governors State University is leading the way to reform.

The Summer Institute, June 18 – 20, will showcase three of GSU’s award-winning programs—and other best practices—created to help underserved students overcome barriers and graduate without debt.

GSU’s Dual Degree Program (DDP)DDP-Male Success Initiative (MSI), and the Center for the Junior Year (CJY) are national models leading to success for the nation’s new student majority (first generation, students of color, adults, and military veterans).

More than 50 professionals from 17 two-and four-year private and public institutions are expected to attend, including those from Washington State University, Rollins College, Georgia State University, and Morgan State University. Arizona’s Maricopa Community Colleges and Florida’s Valencia College will also be represented.

The conference will include a panel of local community college presidents, student presentations, break-out sessions, and, most important, opportunities for university/community college teams to make action plans for improving transfer at their home locations.

On day two of the conference, educators will gather to screen the documentary “Unlikely,’’ which makes a powerful case for the millions of adults who have some college but no degree.

Governors State President Elaine P. Maimon said the goal of the three-day summit is to build trust between community colleges and universities so that the cooperation can go way beyond articulation agreements.

“Governors State University appreciates the support of the Kresge Foundation and its dedication to student success. Governors State University is proud to be singled out for our leadership in building strong alliances with 17 Chicagoland community colleges.”
