University Park , IL–(ENEWSPF)– The students, staff, and faculty of Governors State University recently heard from President Elaine P. Maimon about the state of GSU.
During Convocation, Dr. Maimon recognized the positive momentum on campus. She discussed past and ongoing projects, which are helping to improve the university’s teaching and learning environment including the parking lot repaving, classroom remodeling, and expanded shuttle bus service. She addressed enrollment increases, state budget constraints, and proposed revisions to the academic calendar.
Many hard working individuals and committees were also recognized during Convocation. The Gerald C. Baysore Distinguished Service Award was given to Martha Hellman of Frankfort, who is an administrative assistant in the College of Education, and Associate Provost and Interim Dean of the College of Education Peggy Woodard, also of Frankfort. The Baysore Award is presented annually to the GSU employee who exemplifies the qualities of absolute integrity, total competence, generous dedication, and unfailing civility.
Trimester and annual winners for the best “Why Not?” suggestions were also honored at Convocation. “Why Not?” is the improvement suggestion program at GSU in which staff, students, and faculty win prizes for successfully implemented suggestions that positively impact GSU. Library Web Manager Diane Nadler, of Peotone, and Director of Advancement Services Jean Malloy, of Evergreen Park, were honored for their “Why Not?” suggestions that addressed university calendar issues and parking lot constraints respectively.
Convocation is an annual event at GSU. According to officials at the university, the event is well-attended and provides a unique opportunity to hear the administration’s views on the state of the university.

Live the Creative Life
University Park, IL, September 18, 2008 – Personal creativity and living a creative life are explored in a special presentation led by Jeff Stevenson of the Governors State University art faculty and Geoffrey Bates, director of the Nathan Manilow Sculpture Park at GSU. The presentation is on Wednesday, September 24, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. in Engretson Hall, Governors State University.
Stevenson and Bates will explore the benefits of creative thinking and its application in real life situations. “Creativity,” according to Stevenson, “is not just for artists. It is a learned behavior that can be applied to any life, to any profession, or in any circumstance.”
The presentation includes insights through individual and group exercises, information from various sources and studies, and examples from creatively lived lives. It is designed to help individuals, from any walk of life, create a more rewarding and richer life experience.

Workshop for School Board Candidates at GSU
The Metropolitan Institute for Leadership in Education (MILE) at Governors State University is offering a free workshop for people interested in serving on their local school boards on Saturday, October 11, from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
“The work of our school boards is important for our children and our communities,” said Alicia McCray, Director of MILE and President of Matteson School District 162 School Board. “This workshop gives potential candidates to these positions the opportunity to learn what will be expected and asked of them as educational leaders.”
The workshop presents an overview of the roles and responsibilities of school board members, including ethics and school law, fundamentals of school finance, and working effectively with the school superintendent, as well as how effective school leaders can enhance student achievement, support financial stability, and contribute to the quality of life in a community.
Presenters include experienced and successful school board members.Attendees will receive a packet of the necessary forms required to run for school board office.
