Park Forest, IL—(ENEWSPF)— On Monday, February 18th Rob Gunther, Park Forest Superintendent of Parks received the Great Lakes Park Training Institute’s Daniel Flaherty Park Excellent Award at their annual training conference at Pokagon State Park in Angola, Indiana. The award for “Outstanding Achievement in Parks and Recreation” was presented for the Central Park Wetland Restoration Project.

After giving a 25 minute PowerPoint presentation about the project to the nearly 100 delegates present at the Institute, Gunther accepted the award on behalf of the Village from Cliff Morgan, Chairman of the Awards Committee and Park Manager for Summit County, Ohio.

Following the presentation, questions from the park experts present centered on issues like the absence of a mosquito problem, the impressive numbers of school children who have used the site for environmental education and the task of controlling invasive plant species.

The award is named after the late Daniel Flaherty, who served 40 years as Superintendent of the Chicago Park District. The Great Lakes Institute is made up of park professionals from Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and other Midwest states. The awards are based on the criteria of “completion in 5 years”, “innovative cost”, “creative design” and “community involvement”. Central Park was one of two awards presented in 2008, the other being the Rob Dyrdek/DC Shoe Skate Plaza in Kettering, Ohio.
