CAP and MIT’s Gruber Team Up to Create Video Illustrating Affordable Care Act Successes

Washington, D.C.–(ENEWSPF)–January 17, 2012. Today, the Center for American Progress released a package of products  illustrating how millions of families, small business owners, and seniors have already benefited from the passage of the Affordable Care Act, with millions more standing to gain from increased access to coverage in the next few years.

As the Affordable Care Act nears its second anniversary, it is more important than ever for Americans to understand how the law will affect them and their fellow citizens. To explain the mechanics and importance of the Affordable Care Act, the Center for American Progress teamed up with Jonathan Gruber, an economist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and former advisor to Masschusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and President Barack Obama on health care reform, and illustrator Nathan Schreiber, to create a three-minute, easy-to-digest animated video:

The video, “Illustrating the Success of Health Care Reform,” was based on Gruber’s new book, Health Care Reform: What It Is, Why It’s Necessary, How it Works, and explains why key components of the Affordable Care Act, like the individual mandate, are necessary.

In addition to the video, the Center for American Progress released a new fact sheet highlighting ways in which the Affordable Care Act is already a success, including:

  • 2.5 million young adults gained health insurance.
  • More than 2 million seniors saved more than $1.2 billion on prescription drugs—an average of $550 per person—in 2011.
  • Tens of thousands with pre-existing conditions now have affordable coverage.
  • More than 22.6 million seniors and people with disabilities received preventative care at no cost in 2011.
  • Taxpayers were saved nearly $3 billion thanks to the government’s efforts to crack down on waste, fraud, and abuse.

“Putting aside all the myths, misinformation, politics, and numbers, one fact stands above all the rest: health care reform has already saved lives,” said Topher Spiro, Managing Director of Health Policy at the Center for American Progress.
