1st Annual Scarecrow Contest to be Held as Part of Park Forest’s Safe Halloween Festivities


All entries due by Friday, October 5

Park Forest, IL—(ENEWSPF)—September 28, 2012.  This will be the first year that the Park Forest Safe Halloween Festivities will include a scarecrow contest.  This contest is open to all ages, individuals, families, clubs, groups, schools and businesses.

Each person or group may only enter one time.  Each group and/or classroom cannot exceed 25 people.  Schools are open to children under age 14.  An adult may assist younger children, but the majority of the work must be completed by a child (children). 

There are 3 entry categories:

  • Traditional – Most likely to scare a crow.  Typical farm and garden scarecrows made from cast-off clothing, burlap, sacks, jeans, overalls, straw hats, aprons, bonnets, corn shocks, straw, etc.
  • Any Other – Monsters, gruesome, bloody or scary.  Distasteful or not family oriented scarecrows will be disqualified.
  • Favorite character/person, etc. – Whimsical, fairytale, humorous, fantasy, celebrity, etc.  Design a scarecrow mimicking your favorite fairytale, storybook, animal or fantasy figure and let your imagination run wild. 

Prizes for each category are:

1st Place Prize — $200.00

2nd Place Prize — $125.00

3rd Place Prize — $50 Gas Card

Please note:  schools (or classrooms) will receive a pizza party in lieu of cash prizes, which cannot exceed 50 students.  Entries are limited to one per classroom.

There will also be special awards for scarecrows submitted by businesses and a ‘Resident Choice’ award for one entry as determined by the votes of Park Forest residents.

Winners will be announced at the Safe Halloween event on Wednesday, October 31 at 6 p.m. at the Illinois Theater Center, 371 Artists Walk.

All entries must be submitted no later than Friday, October 5.

Entry forms are also available at Park Forest Village Hall, 350 Victory Drive and the Park Forest Public Library, 400 Lakewood Boulevard.

Scarecrows will be placed outside Dining of the Green in DownTown Park Forest where residents can vote for their favorite entries.  An entry box will be available for submitting votes. Final judging will take place on October 31.
