Celebrating Rekia Boyd’s Birthday with Three Chicago Events

Rekia Boyd, who was born on November 5th, 1989, was shot and killed by off-duty police officer Dante Servin in 2012.

CHICAGO–(ENEWSPF)–November 3, 2016.  Three events will be held this weekend to honor the life of Rekia Boyd.

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 4 –Poetic Justice Poetry Slam in Bronzeville ~ Tribute to Rekia Boyd

Time: 7:00 PM
Location: Southside Community Art Center, 3831 S. Michigan Ave, Chicago, IL

Rekia Boyd has inspired an entire movement to fight police violence against women, especially Black/Africana women. Join us to remember Rekia’s bright and bubbly personality as we celebrate her birthday this Friday, November 4th, with a Poetry Slam in Bronzeville. Rekia’s brother, Martinez Sutton, will open the Slam with ‘Words That Fire’ up the crowd as we celebrate a young woman who will inspire us now and forever. Open Mic. Contestants can sign in at the door. 1st Prize $100, 2nd Prize $75, 3rd Prize $50.

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 5 — Unity & Freedom Party: Celebration of Life & Legacy of Rekia

Time: 1:00 PM – 4:00 PM
Location: 906 S. Homan Ave, Chicago, IL

On Saturday, November 5, the day that would have been Rekia Boyd’s 27th birthday, A Long Walk Home’s Girl/Friends invite and honor activists who have organized to bring justice to Rekia’s family to join us as we inaugurate the #SayHerName memorial series in Chicago.

In collaboration with her family, North Lawndale community members, local artists, and Chicago’s youth organizers, the memorial will be a series of art and activism programs to spotlight Rekia’s story as well as lift up the voices of other African American girls and young women who have been victimized by interpersonal and state violence, culminating with a permanent memorial near Douglass Park.

Women’s All Points Bulletin and the family (WAPB) are in talks with Alderman Scott to have Douglas Park renamed Rekia Boyd Park.

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 5 –United We Skate for Peace Jam

Time: 5:00 PM – 8:00 PM
Location: 656 Holbrook Road, Glenwood, IL

On Saturday, November 5, 2016 the hosts of Talk with Camiella Williams, Martinez Sutton, and Mark Grady will hold a United We Skate for Peace Jam, free for the first 300 people. Admission is free with a small donation, and skate rental is $3.00 per person. Resource vendors for job placement, recreational activities, and mental health prevention will be present. Our vision for the skate jam is to celebrate life and show love to our community.
