Chicago, IL-(ENEWSPF)- Earlier today, U.S. District Judge Thomas Durkin ruled that I may issue a marriage license to a same-sex couple in which one partner is facing a terminal illness.
As a supporter of same-sex marriage, I’m pleased Judge Durkin granted relief to Patricia Ewert and Vernita Gray in this difficult hour.
My office will comply with the judge’s orders and expedite a marriage license to this couple – a service already granted to heterosexual couples in similar situations. Legislative restrictions forced a June 1 implementation date, and unfortunately that may be too late for a loving couple who has already been denied justice for too long.
