Did you receive a DNA testing kit for Christmas? Have your DNA results piqued your interest in your heritage? Maybe you have been plugging along through the various ancestry sites and have hit a dead end? If the answer to any of these questions is yes, the Crete Public Library (CPLD) is here to help. Join us on Saturday, April 14, at 1 p.m., for a workshop on Advanced Genealogy techniques with Tina Beaird, owner of Tamarack Genealogy. Ms. Beaird will show you how to interpret records for more accurate results and will inform you about lesser-known family history resources. Registration is required.

CPLD also has a variety of online databases where you can pursue your family’s past. CPLD has a paid subscription to Ancestry.com that everyone can use for free by coming into the library. Visitors can also access the Family Search website at one of our computer stations or from home.  In addition, Crete Public Library cardholders can access Heritage Quest from their home through our website: www.cretelibrary.org.

If you desire to learn more about genealogy, CPLD offers several books including “Genealogy for the First Time” by Laura Best, “In Search of Your European Roots” by Angus Baxter, and “A Genealogist’s Guide to Discovering Your African-American Ancestors” by Franklin Carter Smith. Family Tree Magazine offers interesting articles on searching techniques and past issues are available for checkout.

Stop by the library located at 1177 N. Main Street in Crete, or call 708-672-8017 for more information. Our friendly staff are available to answer your questions.
